Colloquium for Research Supervision (CRS)

This program aims to support the professional development of research supervisors at Macquarie University. Assisting research students to complete their studies within their allotted time frame has become a priority of the University. The CRS program enables early career academics develop approaches to supervisory practice that focus on adult learning principles and that will also encourage their own research activity. The program also supports experienced supervisors in their role of mentors for their colleagues and in the development of approaches suited to larger research student cohorts from a range of international locations.

The CRS program was run in 2005-06. The aim of the program was to improve the overall supervision quality, to improve candidate completion times, and to generally support the research environment at Macquarie University. In the past two years, 300 staff members from all the Divisions have undertaken the CRS program in preparation for the University's research supervisor registration process which will be completed by end of 2008. In 2007, the remaining academic staff will have the opportunity to undertake the program in their Divisions or in a Central Program.

CRS Evaluation Project

The project will evaluate the impact that the CRS program has had at Divisional level. The project will also ensure that future supervision development programs are targeted to the needs of the university.

The information gained from the evaluation will be core material in preparation for the AUQA audit in 2008-09.

Specialist Researcher Series

From time to time researchers with specialist expertise visit the University. This workshop series is dynamic, in that it facilitates workshops and seminars across campus with those visiting experts, as they are available. In addition to departmental or discipline invitation lists, CPD can disseminate information regarding your specialist workshop and help keep a record of those signed up for the session.

Research Writing Series - Publish or Perish

These Research Writing workshops focus on gaining a better understanding of the conventional or preferred structure of research articles. Participants will become aware of the kinds of devices used by skilled writers to help readers get the most out of their texts, while constructing areas of shared understandings or agreement. Participants in all workshops will analyse text taken from published articles; evaluate examples of professional writing; and work with texts in the context of individual or small group exercises. These workshops are particularly useful for early career academics and those who are starting to write up the outcomes of research projects for publication.

Postgraduate Study

In addition, the CPD, in conjunction with the Institute of Higher Education Research and Development (IHERD), offers a range of award bearing units that focus on research practice and research in higher education. These units are part of the Postgraduate Program in Higher Education. The unit EHE907 Postgraduate Research Supervision can be completed as a core unit of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. Staff completing this program may be eligible for a waiver of tuition costs. EHE 907 explores the learning theory behind models of research supervision and provides a broad understanding of the issues and dilemmas involved in research supervision.
